In the words of Leo Tolstoy, art is the activity by which a person, having experienced an emotion, intentionally transmits it to others.
The Digital Revolution of the 21st Century pressures our interconnected global culture to solve large-scale human problems that are not only technical, but fundamentally ethical. As more people are empowered to take matters into their own hands through accessibility to computers and the internet, creative solutions are necessary. This emergence of the techno-human brings exciting opportunities and disciplinary applications for the sciences. Our institutions and education centers must go beyond the curriculum of neoliberal agenda by promoting critical thinking, hands on learning, and practical, real-world experiences. Thus, student don't merely consume technoogy, they become active creators and proactive agents of change. With the STEAM Revolution and a tech-focused society human, students learn through experimentation and mistakes, in order to develop crucial qualities for navigating an ever-changing world, including resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to take calculated risks. |
Universal Design
The concept of Universal Design (UD) is of crucial importance, especially with communications in the Digital World as it provides accessibility to all people, regardless of age, disability or other factors. Websites and products have the space to be functional for people with any type of impairment of the body or the mind: barrier-free concepts, the broader accessibility movement, and adaptive and assistive technology and also seeks to blend aesthetics into these core consideration.
Universal Design is ethical design as it ensures equality to all with multiple means of engagement, representation, and action. UD principles account for diverse perceptions, languages, expressions, and comprehension. The ultimate goal of UD learning is for everyone to become expert learners: purposeful and motivated, resourceful and knowledgeable, and strategic and goal-directed about learning. Hence, UD Principles give a framework to follow to reduce the barriers to understand and learn. See Interactive Design as reference for below Principles. |

STEAM TEAM Nebula
Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Washington is a learning hub for STEAM and Universal Design concepts. With the Multimedia Communications Course, students learn about prepares students for entry level employment in a variety of multimedia careers including digital video, multimedia content development for the web, digital photography, digital illustration, and design for print and web publications.
For the Intro to Multimedia Course, students colloborate on website design on a Project Team called STEAM TEAM. Team Nebula is where it starts...
A nebula is a distinct luminescent part of interstellar medium, which can consist of ionized, neutral, or molecular hydrogen and also cosmic dust. These protostars cut out and shape these stellar nurseries, encouraging the formation of more and more stars. Not only are stars and solar systems born in them, but our whole universe continuously evolves by the means of these stellar clouds. This represents the brainstorming and creative, innovative beginnings of the STEAM process, which ultimately develops into a sun, the final product or design. |
