Moods & Shades of the Northern Cascades
At more than 500,000 acres, the North Cascades National Park is crowned with 300 glaciers, fragile subalpine meadows and numerous preserved virgin forests; perhaps, this is why it is often called the American Alps. Since it is almost entirely protected as wilderness, the park has few structures or roads. Getting access to the park in the winter time is often impossible due to road closures from heavy snows and a high risk of avalanches. Fortunately, I picked the right time to make my way along State Route 20 for this most awe-inspiring, snow-filled road trip.
Driving through the Cascades in November was a tranquil and majestic experience. Similar to beliefs in many cultures, I connect with the idea that mountains are the ultimate creations of nature and seem to possess valuable ancient wisdom.
My former husband and I fell in love in the Himalayan Mountains and it was the only place we truly felt at home together. He passed away over two years ago, so whenever I am close to any mountain range, I feel his spirit near.
Having the opportunity to capture the many moods and shades of the rugged Northern Cascades was truly a momentous trip for me. As a budding photographer, it was my chance to fully embrace the landscapes that I feel drawn to. Furthermore, my journey through snowy Northern Washington allowed me to take advantage of the tips, tricks, and skills I obtained from this last quarter in my Nature & Macro class.
