The Creative Process (Week 7)
This week's creative process involved the idea of cognitive dissonance and stability within the mind. I using Midjourney only. I find that Firefly needs to be very specific and cannot handle concepts nor complex emotional states. I was curious how MJ would integrate the idea of cognitive dissonance with the images I provided...
On the right above are 4 examples I used for prompt descriptions to inspire the process. At it obviously turned out, most of the images generated focused on portrait style art pieces.
The images on the right are random stragglers that don't fit in with the theme. I had used a few of prompts from my teacher's list and found these images to come out like her style except. I like them all for their particular art techniques.

In terms of reaching my overall theme in wanting a visual image that demonstrates cognitive dissonance, the below is my pick. For an easy understanding, wikipedia defines this concept:
In the field of psychology, cognitive dissonance is the perception of contradictory information and the mental toll of it. Relevant items of information include a person's actions, feelings, ideas, beliefs, values, and things in the environment.
One of my biggest frustrations in this society is that people don't see the beauty around them and are distracted by all the screens. This lady in the image is obsessed with the digital world and doesn't see the amazing nature she is surrounded by. She also shuts out the chaotic scene happening with these flying bird-like creatures, which are attached to her with string. By covering her eyes and ears, she can zone out and not pay attention. It's a great visual for society and this planet with increasing environmental issues.

AI Tools (Week 6)
|
|
For some reason, I combined the idea of a red cloud with industrial wasteland, which is prompted on the next set of images below. I utilized various Firefly tools and techniques to gather inspiration. My favorite one is on the left due to the texture of the clouds, which is simple and calming, and contrasts with the chaotic scene of buildings underneath it. I like the mixed material utilized in this image.
My third digital piece below, made with MidJourney, focuses on the giant sun capturing the attention of the child. It's minimalistic and makes a statement about a kid's frame of mind with the orbs surrounding him: imagination, adventure and creativity. My prompts begin having patterns of I was combining the idea of a cloud with a balloon for a child and somehow came out with a red sun and hanging strings.
|
|
|
This fourth artwork favorite is a dystopian dark fantasy inspiration. The pink and red clouds add cinematic effect to the train passing by. It is other worldly and liminal. I used prompts with industrial theme, seen in the slideshows underneath.
|
|
These last two slideshows below showcase the climax of my red cloud beginning with the last set moving away from the red cloud, focusing more on the person facing backwards, so I stopped with my prompting from there. Overall, it was the red cloud that inspired me as I have come to really appreciate any cloud formation over the past three years of living on the Olympic Peninsula. It's one of my favorite hobbies: to watch clouds and the various moods they convey.
|
|
As usual, I couldn't pick one; the two below look similar in basic composition, but upon close examination they reveal different neurotypes. The one on the left is abstract and suggests mystery. What do the hanging bells mean? It makes one wonder what's going in his world. The right image of building a red balloon cloud is so futuristic and explicit/external exemplifying a message of building the imagination with more concrete action. It's sort of like a yin and yang to consciousness: the internal thinking process and the external doing procedures.
Both images are surreal with their collaging of mixed mediums. Patterns and textures with a model right in the middle seems to be a theme I am liking although the right image has two people in it, expressing more of a collaborative effort of making things happen.
Overall, I am thrilled with the combining of Firefly and Midjourney, the process is endless. I didn't have a particular vision in mind as it continued to evolve the more I pressed for images, descriptions, various technique/art history prompts. I don't think there is anything original to these images, but they make me contemplate on how people see the world around them.
Zero point = Japanese style red balloon. Starting with Firefly for basic visual brainstorming, continuing with a back and forth between Firefly and Midjourney to see what artists and styles come up with description prompting, and then developing a more succinct idea of what I like and want to convey.
Descriptive Words Generated: Andreas Levers, surreal architectural landscapes, ethereal cloudscapes, intricate and bizarre illustrations, psychological phenomena illustrations, Emiliano Ponzi, conceptual installations, Erik Johansson, Alena Aenami, high-tech futurism, Martin Stranka, Nicoletta Ceccoli

I couldn't stop there. I used the descriptions of the above images from Midjourney to create a few other pieces with the theme of cognitive dissonance. I am intrigued by this concept. It seems that cubism is playing a role in this slideshow.
Storytelling (Week 5)
Cupcakes Through the Years (Midjourney & Firefly)
-First "Semi" Story Series-
My stories went a little haywire working with both Firefly and Midjourney. I wanted to create a story of a child: 1) baking cupcakes and making a mess; 2) eating the cupcakes at a tea party with her bestie, Mr. French Dog; and 3) being stuffed from eating all the cupcakes and laying on the flowery garden looking above. I got overwhelmed with Midjourney trying to blend the images together with the same child; for some reason discord would not allow me to upload images to reflect the same character blending. I wanted to compare with firefly imaging and just got lost in all the downloading of files and the constant discord conversations; I had to take a break. Not bad for my first go around with Mid Journey; I just need to stick to my script!
The first set below is actually Firefly and it turned out nicely with the first and second image, but the third would not match up no matter what I prompted and uploaded as an image reference.

This second set is a cupcake party through the years of growing up. The girls look similar as they are aging, but definitely not the same.
This third story is similar to the same girl aging through the years, but I lost track of the cupcakes somewhere in the third image, and the bulldog kept changing colors.
Lastly, this fourth set is just a mish mash of some pretty images of the girl that didn't mix into my storyline of characters. I couldn't resist not posting them since they are so beautiful still.
A Heroine's Journey (Firefly)
-Second Story Series-
Perhaps cliche, but I went with a transformation story of Princess to Knight to Queen (typical character art). It symbolizes any Heroine's journey from being young, naive with the need to explore life on one's own to eventually mature and then take responsibility for one's role in the world. I couldn't just choose one set as I like all of them for their various styles and moods.
I chose this simply, easy plot line as they are visuals that play out on my life's contemplation often. When I was 23 and traveling Latin America, I got a Tarot Card reading, which laid out the hand below: Princess - Knight - Queen. I was quite sheltered as a child, even neglected at times, then decided to understand life on my own terms through curiosity and exploration of the world. Now, I am about to turn 40 years old and finally feel the journey coming full circle into my acceptance of self and my place in society.
The sets of three are similar but differ in way according to my selected art genres and technique modes on Firefly. I wanted the images realistic appearing with qualities of mystery. The Princess Stage all have a glass of wine as I used to party a lot and mask my autistic self in social settings with alcohol. I went with a camel for the Knight Stage as I love deserts and horses are overdone. Moonlight brings the mood of mystery and darkness that one must delve into to find themselves and understand humanity. The Queen phase has various elements as Firefly would not listen to me with serpent/snakes prompt. Then I chose a candle in the last set to bring some inner light to the story.

Finding Flamingo
-Third Story Series Firefly-
Another self exploration storyline and similar in concept the transformation plot above, the below visuals were promoted by the Ugly Duckling theme: not fitting in, exploring, and finally finding one's community.
This type I approached the Firefly prompting with animated techniques and styles with vibrant colors.

Flower Girl (Firefly)
-Fourth Story-
Now I am just having fun with prompts. A little girl finds flowers, makes herself a crown, and goes on with her day. Fun, playful, bright and bold.

Frenchie & Frog (Firefly)
-Fourth Storyline-
I love French Bulldogs. This was a silly idea of a Frenchie befriending a frog. These dogs seem so curious and affectionate. I appreciate the digital at technique and color scheme.

Integration of AI into Digital Art (Week 4)
Inspiration
As usual, it's challenging for me to pick just one photo, so I have two although they are created by the same Artist. (IG @Cyril Lorando). I believe these pieces intertwine in their messaging and meanings. These appeal to me due to the spiritual nature of our reality and consciousness. It's an eastern philosophy that the foundation of existence under an unawakened mind is suffering and it's not until we become aware of our true nature, that of spirit, that we become free from the shackles of this reality. Know Thyself. I can see two underlying messages within each image, which I analyze below. It's funny how the message of an image can change when one reads the title of an art piece.

The lady above, on the left (Tea Time), with my initial perspective, takes the route of distraction and excess just like our modern society teaches us: excessive consumerism and endless temporary dopamine rushes of cars, emails/texts, coffee, sugar to just keep going, to keep up with Joneses, and to ignore one's inner truth. But upon my second glance, and after reading the title of the prompt, I believe the subject of this image refers to her absolute presence in the NOW. She's putting everything down without distractions (no phone, no busy-ness) to be in the present moment to truly enjoy her cup of tea and cookie (Oh, I wish I could eat a cookie)...just enjoying the small things in life's chaotic-ness.
The middle and right images are my own prompts trying to recreate the idea.
The middle and right images are my own prompts trying to recreate the idea.
Again, I have two reactions to the above photo (We are dancing in our chains). In my initial analysis, I see the man as he struggles possibly with mental disturbance of inner entrapment: his own illusions of what holds him back in the world to achieving inner peace whether that be through shame, guilt, selfishness, etc. Or, on my second round of contemplation, this man, despite the chaotic-ness, the unpredictability, and the constant change of life's existence, he rather dances his way through the waves of struggle, through creativity and passion bringing him into the present moment of pure existence.
The two other images are my own prompts trying to recreate it.
These art pieces help me to contemplate my own path of inner progress, that either avoids most distractions in life or finds a balance in the small pleasures it offers. Overall, these pieces guide me to see human nature, allow me to comprehend the ultimate meaning of this existence, and inspire me to continue my path of realization.
With the little knowledge I have of the art world, I would say AI allows us to create our visions in a very short period of time and bringing the ability to change minor details with the flick of a button. It's a great way to communicate something instantly especially if one doesn't have an exact visual in their mind. Either of these pieces could have been painted, but it would take so much more time and may have turned out completely different without the help of AI creativity. I believe art to be a reflection of life's experiences promoting diverse thinking and critical analysis, both of which these paintings provoke.
I don't see any traditional art motifs except for surrealism.

Digital Artwork
My digital art piece for this week is a combination of AI inspired images rendered with my own photographed Bunny Model. It has a melancholic mood with blue shade. If you can see, Bunny is crying. She is surrounded by her kind, but still feels alone. It represents how I often feel being Autistic in this neurotypical world. Bunnies breed like crazy and I often feel like this world is filling up with more and more people (like bunnies) but I still have a hard time connecting. Perhaps I need a black bunny in there somewhere (just like a black sheep, maybe for another art piece).
Overall, it says something about this loneliness epidemic our society is going through.
I used the following photograph and expanded with generative AI. Then I used a Firefly generated image of many bunnies, copied and pasted them into this photo. I rendered the bunny graffiti either directly on Photoshop or through Firefly.

I also started another image with a similar idea but the blending was too difficult and Photoshop kept crashing on me. I was thinking of bunnies as a carpet of snow. Firefly would not generate that for me.
Digital Art Techniques & Tools (Week 3)
AI Prompting
My experimentation with Adobe Firefly was a lot of fun. I used this photo as a reference guide and played around with all the various themes/techniques/concepts to see what AI would generate.
The exact prompt for the first set of images was: "Little girl running away from giant monkeys." The running away part didn't catch on and a lot of her images were with ugly faces, so I didn't include those.

Current thoughts on AI and Creativity
I have read research articles and spent time contemplating both sides of the AI spectrum: good or bad?
Like anything, it's all about moderation, diversity, and passion. In the art world, I can see traditionalists getting upset for the mastery they have achieved in their medium and having all that flow time and contemplation to make something then be disrupted with something so instant and temporary. We can experience this as we swipe through and scroll Instagram with the constant bombarding of images (and videos) that are either very creative, trendy, or shallow - your judgement is all your own. Beauty comes in various shapes, sizes, and colors...and that is amazing ability of our digital world, to share and express the many voices of our unique perceptions on the world! But, also, it can totally consume us with being so withdrawn from the natural world and what it has to offer there, real stuff on planet earth that we can touch, feel, and build with our hands.
Furthermore, all this access can be overwhelming, distracting, and downright competitive. I have just slowed down my desire to keep up to date with social media. It was all consuming really and kept taking me off track from the meaningfulness I have gathered in my life's experiences. Now, it's not the sky that is the limit, it's the whole dang universe giving us the ability to create worlds at our fingertips, with little training in specialized software or traditional art mediums.
For that matter, in my opinion, there is a huge difference between art, consumerism, and business in which AI is being utilized. I understand that AI is a huge game changer for efficiency purposes and money making opportunities. Reducing the amount of time for editing purposes is huge. It can also bring new ideas and visuals to the table that could have been out of reach. Also, bringing to life visions that seemed impossible before. As everything though, I think it's a mix and match tool for various projects.
Overall, I like creativity and anything that adds to that process is beneficial. I was scared of AI before as it seemed to take away from the creative process, but after using it and playing around with it, I am beginning to appreciate what it offers especially for someone like me who can find it difficult to communicate my thoughts and feelings through words only. I would like to use AI for more intentional work on my self expression and how I experience the world. My challenge is to not to get overwhelmed by the many choices and decisions it offers.

As Above so Below
My focus in these images below relate to size: from the Macro to the Micro world. As a child, I was fascinated by the movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids , Gulliver's Travels, and Alice in Wonderland.
I did not have any initials sketches, I just knew I would use photographs of my daughter for inspiration. When I found a photo I could use for creative purposes, I imagined the macro-micro perspective and based my design and prompts off that visual. I utilized Firefly for a few of the backdrops, but found it difficult to work with my other ideas, so working bit-by-bit with Photoshop AI was my best strategy. I am still learning the techniques to blend extractions in better with background images.

Composition & Design Principles (Week 2)
I didn't have just one theme in mind when first playing around with Photoshop AI. I wanted to try a multitude of prompts and simple ideas to understand how it all works depending on a photo I was planning to use. Too many ideas run through my head at once, so I couldn't adhere to just one concept. However, all are originally inspired from my own portfolio of photography.
Semi Surreal: AI generated landscape backgrounds with animals; photograph extracted characters.
Animated: cartoon-like worlds, AI prompted.
Psychedelic Inspired Textures & Events: AI generated with photo extractions and blending. Disappointed woman at the party is inspired by how I feel at loud events; she is completely AI generated.
Influences (Week 1)
The AI artist, Polly_in_wonderland, has a wide variety of stories and images, but one that catches my eye is her story with Donut Lovers and Style. I am always curious that despite the amount of obesity and eating problems in our American culture, the art and visuals we are bombarded with on a daily basis seem to be lacking in this aspect of our society. Hence, I chose this visual storyline because the first image I tried to generate with AI software dealt with the obesity epidemic. If art is supposed to mirror our reality, why don’t I see big people in more paintings or photographs?
There are only two people in the club of unlimited donut lovers: me and my girlfriend. We love donuts and travel. And we are such stylish!!! - Instagram
For me, this AI Digital Art story is the real portrayal of our 21st Century average person. The couples depicted are of same sex or even nonbinary in a few. The artist utilizes visual elements in both retro/vintage and futuristic styles. Although these couples are engaging in their passionate pursuit of driving, the donuts are implied with the physical characteristics of obesity since no donuts are actually being eaten. These people lack emotion, which lends to the personal view I have of most Americans that appear discontent and distracted with ambivalence, like a deer in headlights.
Colors are muted with a themed palette of sage green/teal and pink, which demonstrates a 1950s feel and somewhat more feminine (although, besides the colors used, the story lacks any femininity in my opinion). And obviously the helmets are in a league of their own, adding to the strangeness of human beings in this culture. It makes me question the systems we have in place regarding food and transportation: two of our basic sensory needs and actions. The fact that they have helmets on while inside the car is bizarre, like they are protecting their “mind” but could care less about their “body”. They seem to be alien-like. Have humans evolved into a different type of species…one that is taking us down the wrong path into the future?

Another Digital Artist that I am fond of is Joooo.Ann, whom also sets the screen for other-worldly scenes. My favorite of her worlds are that of the Cloud, High in the Sky, as well as the cactus filled house, Succuhouse.
